Introduction

Tunisia is a Republic in Northern Africa, bounded on the north and east by the Mediterranean Sea, on the south by Libya, and on the west by Algeria.

The population is largely Berber and Arab. Islam is the dominant religion.
Arabic is the official language, although French is widely spoken.
Home of the ancient city of Carthage, the Romans, Arabs, Ottoman Turks and French realized its strategic significance, making Tunisia a hub for control over the region.

Tourism and Leisure

With its 1,300 km of coastline, its vestiges from 3,000 years of civilisation, a landscape ranging from northern forests to southern desert and oases, making Tunisia a choice tourist destination.

Thanks to an extensive and diversified tourism base (Saharan tourism, beach holidays, cultural sites, convention centre, yachting, golf and spa activities…), Tunisia has enjoyed an increase in numbers of tourists (some 5 million tourists a year) making it the number one tourist destination on the southern rim of the Mediterranean.

Diversification is further enhanced by ongoing improvements in tourism infrastructure. Tunisia has 800 hotels of different categories, 228 tourist restaurants, six marinas, many entertainment centres, and eight golf courses throughout the country’s tourism zones.

Spas have also followed a spectacular growth path, with facilities in Sousse, Hammamet, Jerba, Gammarth, and Zarzis using the most stringent international standards.
Shopping is a real treat with many bargains in carpets, rugs, leather items, jewellery and pottery. Prices are up for negotiation - if you don’t haggle the shopkeeper will be astounded! Never offer more than 50% of the starting price as an opening bid…! There are however, for non-hagglers, shops with fixed prices! Other excellent buys are spices and herbs. The souks and food markets are great fun, and, if on a self-catering basis offer top quality fruit and vegetables at excellent prices.
Eating out can be a gourmets delight - tempting French cuisine, authentic Tunisian, ‘fusion cuisine’ - a hint of the Mediterranean and a touch of Tunisian and of course the wonderful seafood. Or if a quick snack is your preference try a meal at any of the small back street cafes selling everything from Hot Dogs to Couscous the national dish. Local wine and beer is also excellent.
